CatEx takes a stand against amendments to EU Directive Catalogue Exchange (CatEx) has launched a campaign calling on the government to abandon the proposals to amend the Consumer Rights Directive, which could see retailers forced to sell into all countries within the EU and offer free returns. The trade body's advisory board is working in partnership with the British Retail Consortium to lobby against the amendments and to call for a further review. It’s also calling on its members to lobby their MEPs, to ensure they are more aware of the wider impact of this legislation. More information on CatEx can be found at www.catalogueexchange.co.uk. HMV divests Waterstone’s Entertainment products retailer HMV Group has sold its bookstore chain Waterstone’s to a fund controlled by Russian billionaire Alexander Mamut for £53 million. Mamut already owns 6.7 percent of HMV Group. In a trading statement accompanying the announcement, HMV revealed that in the 17 weeks ended 30th April, total HMV sales were down 16.6 percent and Waterstone’s sales fell 11.3 percent. In the year to 24th April 2010, Waterstone's made a trading profit of £2.8 million against turnover of £514 million.

Jimmy Choo sold Luxury products group Labelux, which owns perfume maker Coty, has acquired footwear brand Jimmy Choo from TowerBrook Capital Partners. The transaction has the full support of Jimmy Choo’s senior management led by founder and chief creative officer Tamara Mellon OBE and chief executive officer Joshua Schulman, who will remain with Jimmy Choo in their existing capacity.
Marks & Spencer grows profits Marks & Spencer says it had a “good year with growth in market share in all areas”. Pretax profits rose 11 percent, from £702.7 million last year to £780.6 million in the year ended 2nd April. M&S Direct sales were up 31 percent in the year, while international sales grew by 6.1 percent, accounting for 10.3 percent of total group revenues.

Postal Services Bill moves through House of Lords The Postal Services Bill has cleared its way through the House of Lords and any amendments made to it will now be considered by the House of Commons on 9th June. Among the changes to the Bill are extra regulatory certainty to Royal Mail and more reporting requirements on the part of the government.
Aurora Fashions offers 90-minute delivery in London Aurora Fashions, the owner of Coast, Oasis and Warehouse, has launched 90-minute delivery across all its brands. The service is provided by Shutl and allows customers in London to order and receive goods within 90 minutes.
Abcam buys US antibodies producer Abcam, a Cambridge-based producer, marketer and distributor of antibodies, has bought US-based MitoSciences Inc for $6.0 million (£3.7 million). Mito Sciences is a provider of mitochondrial antibodies with a catalogue of more than 200 products. In the year ended 31st December 2010, it had product revenues of $2.1 million (£1.3 million), the majority of which came from customers based in the USA.
Amazon to create 900 jobs in Edinburgh Amazon is to open a new customer service centre in Edinburgh, creating 500 permanent and 400 temporary jobs. The new facility is supported by a £1.8 million grant from Scottish Development International to help train new staff and support the construction and fit-out of the new premises, expected to open in August 2011.
