JoJo sells stake to private equity firm New Look founder Tom Singh has taken a minority stake in maternity and nursery cataloguer/retailer JoJo Maman Bébé through his investment vehicle Magenta Partners. JoJo recently reported a 50 percent increase in sales from £18 million in 2009 to a projected £27 million in the year to June 2011, and profits of 8 percent--or £2.16 million.

Thompson & Morgan, Donald Russell up for sale? Rumours are circulating that two more direct commerce businesses have received takeover approaches. According to reports, seeds and plants cataloguer Thompson & Morgan is on the market with a price tag of £25 million. Three private equity groups, including Bridgepoint Development Capital, GCP Capital Partners and NBGI Private Equity, have been linked to a potential deal. Separately, mail order butcher Donald Russell is said to have appointed advisers after it received takeover approaches from a trade buyer and private equity firm. |

Shop Direct, Mobile Fun make international appointments Following its international expansion into Germany and France, mobile-phone accessories etailer Mobile Fun appointed Richard Moore as head of international to spearhead the company’s continuing growth and sales across Europe. Shop Direct Group, the parent company of Littlewoods and Very, appointed Marcel Apfel as international director. Apfel was previously vice president, international business development at Pentland Brands, with key group responsibility for expansion into Russia, India, South America and South Korea.

Sales melt at Thorntons Confectionery retailer Thorntons saw its direct sales decline 7.9 percent to £2.4 million in the third quarter with growth in online consumer sales offset by a decline in corporate sales. Overall sales are down 2.9 percent due to unprecedented snowy weather in December and an unusually warm Easter. |
Warm weather and royal wedding boost Next Homewares and apparel retailer Next said it benefited from the warm Easter and the royal wedding, with brand sales up 5.2 percent in the first quarter. As a result, it now estimates pretax profit to be in the range of £535 million to £585 million, some £15 million ahead of previous expectations. |
Amazon moves into secret sales Amazon has entered the private-sales arena with MyHabit.com. The flash-sales website offers discounts on designer clothing with free shipping as standard. The site currently only despatches to addresses in the USA. |
