Ideal Shopping Direct to be acquired by Inflexion
TV-shopping business Ideal Shopping Direct is to be acquired by private equity firm Inflexion for £78.3 million. Current Ideal directors Mike Hancox and Ian Jebson will remain with the business. They will be joined by former Halfords chief executive David Hamid who becomes chairman. In the year ending 2nd January, sales increased by 13.5 percent to £117.3 million and pretax profit rose from £1.1 million in 2009 to £6.7 million.    


Purekit buys Extremepie
Purekit, an online seller of footwear and outdoor clothing, has acquired apparel etailer Extremepie for an undisclosed sum. Extremepie’s previous owner Extreme Group had put the business on the market in July last year in order to concentrate on its licensing activities.

Argos MD departs
Argos’s managing director Sara Weller has stepped down after the general merchandiser revealed that operating profit plunged 18 percent from £266.2 million to £219.0 million in the year to 26th February 2011. Total sales at parent company Home Retail group, which also owns Homebase, were down 3 percent to £5.85 billion. Benchmark operating profit slumped 13 percent to £251 million during the year.


Sales drop at FGH, but Otto group confident of international performance
Despite posting a 25 percent drop in sales to €199 million (£175 million), parent company Otto Group says its UK division Freemans Grattan Holdings performed as planned in fiscal 2010/11, and was on course with its “successful restructuring”. Taking FGH’s performance into account, Otto still increased its European turnover (excluding Germany) by 9.5 percent to €3.4 billion, with turnover at the Russian operation doubling to €349 million. Overall group turnover rose by €1.3 billion to €11.4 billion.

Tesco grows online business
Group sales at Tesco rose 8.1 percent to £67.6 billion in the 52 weeks ended 26th February, with underlying pretax profit up 12.3 percent to £3.8 billion. The supermarket says its online business grew strongly during the period, up 15 percent on last year. Its UK nonfood online arm Tesco Direct grew 30 percent during the year.

Strong first quarter at Find-me-a-gift
Online retailer Find-me-a-gift.co.uk has experienced a 25 percent uplift on year-on-year sales during the first quarter 2011. The retailer was helped in part by the strong demand for royal wedding memorabilia, says managing director Adam Gore.

Wiggle opens store on Facebook
Online bike retailer Wiggle.co.uk has launched a store on Facebook allowing users to shop for items by clicking through to the main Wiggle website. It also allows users to rate products and search by “most liked”. 

Asos challenged over name rights in Europe
According to published reports, Asos is fighting off a challenge by German retailer Anson's over the use of its trading name in Germany. Anson’s has requested a court in Hamburg to prohibit the use of the Asos name to sell clothing in Germany as the name is too similar to Anson’s. Asos has reportedly passed the challenge off as “opportunistic”. According to the national press, however, Asos is also fighting a stronger challenge from Swiss retailer Assos.

Sales and profits up at Feelunique
Jersey-based cosmetics and beauty products etailer Feelunique has seen sales grow 50 percent from £11 million in 2009/10 to £16.1 million in the year ended March 2011. EBITDA rose 64 percent to £985,000. The company predicts that turnover will rise to about £25 million over the next 12 months.
