Amazon launches new cloud streaming service Amazon has launched a new online service to give customers the opportunity to upload and store their files on the Amazon server and play and view them on a smartphone or computer. The ‘cloud’ technology makes it easier for consumers to access their digital content on the move. This launch puts Amazon ahead of their competitors Google and Apple who are both thought to be developing this service. |

Directory boosts sales at Next Cataloguer/retailer Next announced record group pretax profits of £551 million in the year ending January 2011—up 9 percent on the previous fiscal year. Group revenues were also up, by 1 percent, to £3.54 billion. Highlighting the importance of the direct channel, Next says its home shopping arm Next Directory now accounts for 27 percent of group sales and 40 percent of profits. Sales at the Next Directory division were £935.5 million, up 7.1 percent on last year.

LVCR reduced to £15 Delivering the budget last Wednesday, Chancellor George Osborne said that from November 2011, Low Value Consignment Relief (LVCR) will be reduced from £18 to £15. The move seeks to prevent the abuse of a tax loophole that allows businesses operating out of the Channel Islands to sell goods with a value of less than £18 without VAT. The government said it will review the matter again in 2012. |
MBO at TJ Hughes Discount department store chain TJ Hughes has undergone a management buyout backed by private equity firm Endless. Its previous owner, Silverfleet Capital, had bought the business in 2003 and in that time grown the store portfolio from 37 to 57 stores. |
Asos.com installs recommendation technology Asos.com has added personalised recommendation technology from Fredhopper to its website. The behavioural targeting software provides recommendations to customers based on what they’ve previously bought and on similar purchase behaviours of others to increase cross-sell and upselling opportunities.

Sales and profits rise at Stanley Gibbons Stanley Gibbons, the stamps and collectibles specialist, reports that sales in the year ended 31st December rose 13 percent to £26.4 million. Profits up at Screwfix Profits at DIY and tools retailer/cataloguer Screwfix rose 24.7 percent in the year to 29th January 2011, to £28 million. At parent company Kingfisher, which also operates B&Q, UK and Ireland retail profits were up 11.8 percent to £243 million. |
