Glasses Direct buys Sunglasses Shop
Glasses Direct, an online retailer of prescription spectacles, has acquired Sunglasses Shop, a seller of designer sunglasses, for an undisclosed sum. The two businesses will continue to be run separately with Sunglasses Shop remaining at its Southend-on-Sea base.

Royal Mail to shed 3,451 jobs
Royal Mail is cutting approximately 3,451 jobs as part of its ongoing rationalisation and modernisation plans. The carrier announced plans to cut 1,000 operational line manager positions through voluntary redundancy. This follows a separate review of managers in head office departments that will see a further 1,700 people leave Royal Mail. In addition, 751 jobs will go at Royal Mail’s London mail centres.

Argos will make TV shopping debut this summer
Argos is poised to launch a TV-shopping channel later in 2011. The multichannel retailer plans to launch a channel on Sky this summer as part of its commitment to offer “customers a whole range of convenient way to shop with Argos,” says managing director Sara Weller.

New Look’s chief executive departs
Apparel retailer New Look has confirmed that Carl McPhail, who has served as chief exec since 2008, has resigned. Separately John Gildersleeve, nonexecutive chairman since January 2010, has also announced he is stepping down from the board. As a result, founder and majority shareholder Tom Singh takes the helm in the interim as executive chairman.

Majestic gets local online
Majestic Wine is enhancing its online shopping experience by using local content on its website. Each of the 161 stores within the Majestic network has been given its own online profile page allowing customers to see content that is local to them, including in-store sampling, a schedule of events, and links to a store-specific Twitter newsfeed. Majestic worked with its ecommerce services provider Snow Valley to assign a local store to each customer using the customer’s billing address. 

Sales and profits up at Farnell
Sales at components firm Premier Farnell for the year to 30th January were up 24.6 percent to £990.8 million compared with £795.3 million in 2009/10. Underlying operating profit was also up from £72.7 million last year to £112.1 million. For the first time ecommerce overtook other sales channels, accounting for 51.1 percent of total sales, with growth in all regions.

BrandAlley embarks on its biggest ever campaign
Designer discount etailer BrandAlley has launched its biggest ad campaign to date to highlight the expansion of its range to encompass fashion, beauty, home and travel. The adverts will run in magazines, direct mail, emails and online.

Digivate acquired by Prism DM
Fulfilment services provider Prism DM has broadened its expertise with the acquisition of online marketing agency Digivate. Founding director Mark Bodoano will continue to head up the business at its Covent Garden headquarters.
