Webb Group buys BCA Entertainment products marketer the Webb Group has acquired Book Club Associates (BCA) from Germany-based holding company Aurelius Group. The Webb Group supplies home-entertainment products to retailers including Wilkinson and Next, as well as selling direct to consumers through its Razamataz, Simply Entertainment and choicesuk brands. The acquisition adds more than 250,000 new customers to Webb Group’s 1-million-strong database.

Sales and profits up at John Lewis John Lewis experienced double-digit growth in the year to 29th January 2011. Sales performed ahead of expectations, rising 11.9 percent to £3.23 billion. Online, the John Lewis website recorded a 37.9 percent jump in sales to £538.2 million. Operating profit was up by 22 percent to £201.2 million, marking a return to prerecession levels. Overall, the John Lewis Partnership, which also includes Waitrose, saw group sales rise 10.6 percent to £8.21 billion and group operating profit climb 10.6 percent to £431 million. |

White Stuff eyes international expansion According to published reports, apparel retailer White Stuff is looking for a new chairman ahead of a push into international markets. It is understood that current chairman Vince Gwilliam will step down to become an independent director and that a headhunter has been appointed to recruit a replacement.

Privalia acquires Dress for Less Privalia, the Barcelona-based private-sales club, is to buy Dress For Less, a German online retailer of discount apparel. The acquisition, funded through a combination of €88 million (£76 million) of new equity, debt facilities and shares, sees Privalia extend its reach and marks its entry to the German market. |
Strong first quarter for Ocado Online grocer Ocado delivered strong growth in the first quarter of 2011, with gross sales up 24.7 percent to £146.2 million. In the 12 weeks to 20th February, Ocado took an average of 103,207 orders a week, up 26 percent on the equivalent period last year. Ocado’s chief financial officer Andrew Bracey said the business was profitable in the first quarter. |

Zara extends ecommerce reach Apparel retailer Zara has extended its online reach and started shipping to customers in Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Monaco, and Switzerland. It now has ecommerce operations in 16 countries in Europe and plans to open online stores in the US and Japan later this year. |
