Santa was good to Next...
Catalogue and web sales at Next for the 22 weeks to 24th December were up 6.8 percent from the previous year, and retail sales rose 4.6 percent, exceeding expectations. As a result Next has raised its full-year forecast of profit before tax to £490 million-£500 million; in November it had anticipated pretax profit of roughly £472 million.

... And to M&S as well
Online sales at Marks & Spencer for the 13 weeks to Boxing Day were up 32 percent from the previous third quarter. Overall like-for-like sales were up nearly 2 percent. And after adjusting for the timing of its annual post-Christmas sale, the first day of which fell within the third quarter of 2008 but not that of 2009, “total UK sales were up over 3 percent”, according to a statement.

Record Christmas sales for John Lewis...
Like-for-like sales at John Lewis for the five weeks to 2nd January were up 12.7 percent from the previous year and up 10.4 percent from the comparable period of 2007. Sales for the week before Christmas reached a record £112 million. For the 13 weeks to 2nd January like-for-likes were up 12.2 percent from the previous year.

... And a strong showing for Shop Direct Group
At Shop Direct Group, the parent company of Woolworths, Littlewoods, and Very, sales for the six weeks to 1st January were up 6.3 percent on the previous year. What’s more, margin growth was “significantly ahead of sales growth” as a result of less clearance activity.

More holiday sales figures
Among the 6,000 small and midsize etailers surveyed by shopping-cart provider ekmPowershop.com, sales in the run-up to Christmas 2009 rose roughly 23 percent from the previous year. Another survey, by ecommerce solutions provider Actinic, produced even rosier figures: The small and midsize online sellers it surveyed reported an average 42 percent increase in turnover for November and December 2009 compared with November and December 2008.
