Strong direct sales for Mothercare
Direct sales at Mothercare and its Early Learning Centre division were £58.0 million for the half-year to 10th October, up 15 percent from the same period of last year. Catalogue and web sales now account for nearly 20 percent of the company’s UK turnover, and it will be trialling ecommerce sites for other countries early next year. Total sales for the half-year were £387.3 million, up 7.9 percent from last year. Underlying profit before tax rose 11.1 percent, to £10.0 million.

Another half-year of growth for Asos
Asos posted a 47 percent rise in half-year revenue and a 34 percent income in gross profit, though operating profit rose a more modest 14 percent. For the six months ended 30th September, the fashion etailer had operating profit of £3.8 million on sales of £65.7 million. International sales for the period grew 112 percent. But Asos blames the recent Communication Workers Union strikes against Royal Mail for the fact that its UK sales for the seven weeks to 15th November were up “only” 23 percent from the same period last year.

Scottish politician: make Royal Mail a delivery option
Liberal Democrat Scottish affairs spokesperson Alistair Carmichael wants all online sellers to offer Royal Mail as an option for deliveries to the Highlands and other remote areas. He says that private couriers typically charge very high fees for those locations or don’t deliver there at all; as a result, potential customers in remote regions have no access to those merchants’ goods.

Seven tactics to enhance your marketing email efforts
Social networking, SMS, and customer reviews aren’t in and of themselves new concepts. But using them in conjunction with email is, if not new, underused. For advice on optimising those and other tactics in your email marketing, head to catalog-biz.com.

Adapt to survive: three key features
When customers have less money to spend, loyalty comes from the complete offer, not just from the brand. The offer should combine great, attractively priced products with an alluring environment to create a memorable customer experience. To create this effective package, you need to analyse your market, the experience shoppers have with your company, and the agility of your business. Find out how at  catalog-biz.com.
