“All out” postal strikes begin Friday The Communication Workers Union (CWU) has called additional strikes against Royal Mail for Friday, 6th November, and Monday, 9th November. Unlike the strikes of the previous weeks, these latest work stoppages are “all out”, with all staff walking out simultaneously. In related news, two-thirds of the online retailers surveyed by Interactive Retail in Media Group have suffered a decline in revenue since the CWU strikes against Royal Mail began last month, with sales falling an average of 30 percent.

Next sales beat projections Fashion and home goods merchant Next reported better-than-expected turnover for the third quarter ended 31st October. Overall sales rose 3.1 percent over last year’s, with direct sales up 5.1 percent, while retail like-for-likes were down just 1.3 percent. As a result, the company has revised its projections for the second half of the fiscal year. It now expects web and catalogue sales for the period to be up 4-6 percent compared with the second half of last year, whereas in September it had projected growth of no more than 2 percent.

Strong half-year web sales for M&S Half-year online sales at Marks & Spencer were up 29 percent from last year. Total sales for the 26 weeks to 26th September were £4.34 billion, an increase of 2.8 percent from the first half of the previous year, with UK sales up 1.8 percent. Profit before tax inched downward 0.4 percent, to £306.7 million. The retailer plans to roll out its click-and-collect service, which allows customers to order online and pick up their purchases in-store, to all of its stores after Christmas; the service is currently available for 166 stores.

White Stuff sales climb 47 percent Half-year sales at fashion cataloguer/retailer White Stuff jumped a whopping 47 percent from last year. Even better, EBITDA rose 70 percent. Much of the revenue growth came from the opening of roughly one new store a month.

Hillarys launches spin-off website Window-dressing merchant Hillarys has launched Web-curtains.com, which sells made-to-measure curtains. The new site is a sister brand to Web-blinds.com and the core Hillarys website.

Koodos sold to StockShifters parent E-trader Group, a specialist in the clearance and overstock market and operator of StockShifters.com, has bought discount fashion etailer Koodos for an undisclosed sum.
