Warm weather gives June sales a lift
Year-on-year retail sales for June climbed 3.2 percent, according to the British Retail Consortium – significantly higher than the 1.2-percent rise economists had expected. Direct sales, including online sales, of nonfood items jumped 16.8 percent. The hot, sunny weather is credited for much of the sales increase, as consumers flocked to buy barbecues, fans, and other summertime merchandise.

Thorntons sales wilt from the heat, however

Chocolatier Thorntons blamed the warm weather for its 2.7-percent drop in sales, to £27.9 million, for the fiscal fourth quarter ended 27th June. Sales for the second half of the year did rise 6.6 percent, though, to £86.4 million. Fourth-quarter direct sales tumbled 30.8 percent, to £800,000, due to “a continued weakness in sales to corporate customers”. Sales to consumers via the web and the call centre fell 3.1 percent during the same period, though they rose 9.5 percent for the second half of the fiscal year.
