    Littlewoods parent posts 130-percent rise in ebitda

    Shop Direct Group reported its first increase in annual sales in more than a decade, to £1.78 billion. But while sales for the year ended 30th April were up 2.6 percent from the previous fiscal year, that takes into account a 53rd week to the year. Excluding that extra week, sales rose just 0.5 percent. Earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation, meanwhile, soared 130 percent, to £60.9 million. Web sales for the company, whose flagship brand is Littlewoods, increased 31 percent, accounting for 38 percent of total sales.

     

    Otto UK looks to “restructure” buying and creative departments

    The buying and creative departments at Otto UK are being looked at “with regards to restructuring and streamlining the business”. A spokesperson confirmed that a consultation period has begun with buyers and merchandisers as the company considers whether to centralise purchasing in Germany, where parent company Otto Group is based. A further consultation period with other departments is scheduled for early next year. Otto UK’s catalogues include Freemans, Grattan and Oli.

     

    Marchpole enters administration

    Last week apparel manufacturer/marketer Marchpole asked the Financial Services Authority (FSA) to suspend its trading and listing on the London Stock Exchange. This week the company has gone into administration, appointing Grant Thornton as its receiver. Marchpole, whose brands include cataloguers Home Body and Home Mummy, is seeking to sell its businesses.

     

    Jamie Oliver website goes transactional

    JamieOliver.com has added a transactional component to the site to sell the chef’s new Jme range of kitchenware, food and gifts. Web agencies Flow and Splendid designed the addition to the site, which was then built by Prism DM. Prism DM is also providing integrated customer service, warehousing and order fulfilment from its premises in Farnborough.  

     

    Mamas & Papas heads to Asia

    Nursery products retailer/cataloguer Mamas & Papas has signed a franchise agreement with ImaginAsia Group to open a dozen stores in Singapore and Hong Kong during the next five years. In addition to stores in the UK and Ireland, Mamas & Papas has a presence in the Middle East, with stores in the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Qatar and Bahrain.

     

    Net-a-Porter chief resigns

    Less than six months after joining online luxury-goods merchant Net-a-Porter, chief executive Sven Gaede has resigned, citing personal reasons. Chairman Natalie Massenet and chief operating officer Mark Sebba will assume Gaede’s responsibilities until a replacement is found.

     

    Wiggly Wigglers is a winner

    Congratulations, Wiggly Wigglers: The gardening catalogue won the 2008 Global Dell Small Business Excellence Award. The company was lauded for its use of Facebook and other social media. The award comes with a prize of $50,000 in Dell technology.
