    Half-year profits plunge at M&S

When is a 44-percent plunge in pretax profits not horrendous news? When analysts had braced themselves for an even greater decline. And that’s the case with Marks & Spencer, whose half-year profits fell to £307.8 million for the 26 weeks to 27th September; analysts had expected profits of £280 million-£295 million. Total half-year sales rose less than 1 percent, to £4.2 billion, with like-for-like sales down 5.7 percent.

    Findel half-year sales inch upward...

It’s only a 1-percent increase, but it’s an increase nonetheless: Half-year sales at multititle mailer Findel rose just that much, and within the healthcare division sales increased 14 percent. But within the home shopping division, which includes the Ace, Cotswold Company, Letterbox and Studio brands, year-on-year sales for the six months to 30th September fell 1 percent. So did sales in its educational group, which includes A to Z Supplies and NES Arnold.

Also reporting a 1-percent rise in sales (well, 0.9 percent, to be precise) is Next, for the 14 weeks to 1st November. Catalogue and web sales were up 2.1 percent from the comparable period of last year, and retail sales rose 0.3 percent. Like-for-like retail sales were down 4.4 percent, however.

    BrightMinds acquires Rosie Nieper

Educational-toys cataloguer BrightMinds has acquired Rosie Nieper T-shirts for an undisclosed sum. In addition to selling direct to consumers via catalogue and the web, Rosie Nieper has a growing wholesale division.

    Marchpole suspends LSE trading

Apparel manufacturer/marketer Marchpole Holdings, whose brands include cataloguers Home Body and Home Mummy, has asked the Financial Services Authority (FSA) to suspend its trading and listing on the London Stock Exchange while it works to strengthen its finances. Earlier this month the company warned of “extremely difficult” financial conditions. In a statement, Marchpole said it “is taking all appropriate measures to deal with the current challenging economic environment and is maintaining a regular dialogue with the company's bankers, in common with most other businesses exposed to the retail sector”.

Bits and Pieces is back in business...

The UK version of the Bits and Pieces catalogue and website has relaunched in time for Christmas. The puzzles and gifts merchant had stopped doing business earlier this year, when its US parent company, BlueSky Brands, went out of business. In addition to the US and UK Bits and Pieces businesses, BlueSky Brands had owned US gifts cataloguer The Paragon. Another US company, multititle gardening mailer Gardens Alive, acquired the two brands in May and recently relaunched their US websites.

...while Linen Works goes on hiatus

Marina Guirey, founder of home textiles cataloguer The Linen Works, will “temporarily close” the business at the end of November for an estimated nine to 12 months. In an email to customers she wrote, “I am having my third child in January and in this current difficult economic climate it is not viable to keep the company going whilst I am on maternity leave”. To liquidate stock, the website is discounting all products by 25 percent.

    Tesco, Boden top “survivability” list

Fashion cataloguer Boden was number two on a “survivability” index, compiled by BDO Stoy Hayward and Verdict, that ranks the companies in the best position to emerge triumphant from the current economic woes. Tesco headed the list; other multichannel retailers in the top 10 included John Lewis, eco-friendly fashion cataloguer Howies, fashion retailer/cataloguer TM Lewin and casualwear retailer/cataloguer Fat Face.
