Littlewoods parent company Shop Direct Group plans to make anywhere from 280 to 400 call centre employees redundant, according to reports, though at least some of the workers will be offered the opportunity to retrain for different positions or work different shifts. The news follows a recent announcement from the home shopping company that it would shed 100 management roles but create a number of new positions. The moves are part of Shop Direct’s continued restructuring to support its “ongoing transformation from a catalogue to an online business,” according to a statement. The web now accounts for more than 50 percent of the company’s sales. |

Argos slammed for “wicked” credit-card APR
“Wicked”: That’s how Liberal Democrat shadow chancellor Vince Cable described a credit card for use at Argos that charges an APR of up to 222.7 percent. Provident Financial, which offers the Easy Shop Card in a tie-up with Argos, countered by saying that the APR figure was misleading, as Easy Shop is a prepay card rather than a long-term loan. An Argos spokesperson, meanwhile, told The Independent, “We are not involved in offering the credit facilities, determining credit worthiness or setting interest rates for the card. Nor do we manage any marketing or promotion of the card. The Easy Shop card is not promoted on the Argos website or in any other Argos marketing materials as it is a Provident product.” |
