Hancox to helm Ideal Shopping
|
Former Otto UK CEO Mike Hancox has been named CEO of Ideal Shopping Direct, effective 3rd November. Hancox announced his resignation from Otto in June, following the decision by parent company Otto Group to remove the Parcelnet logistics business from the Otto UK division and integrate it into the company’s international logistics division. Ideal Shopping’s previous CEO, Andrew Fryatt, resigned last week. Ideal Shopping sells via home-shopping TV channels and the web; Otto UK’s catalogues include Freemans, Grattan and Oli.

Argos parent takes first-half hit
|
Home Retail Group, the parent company of Argos and Homebase, posted a £450 million operating loss after exceptional charges for the first half of 2008. Benchmark operating profit was down 22 percent from the first half of 2007, to £106 million. At cataloguer/retailer Argos the decline in benchmark operating profit was 14 percent, compared with a 37-percent plunge for DIY retailer Homebase. Total half-year sales were all but flat at nearly £2.74 billion, but like-for-like sales fell 3 percent at Argos and 10.3 percent at Homebase. |

Strong direct sales for Mothercare
|
Second-quarter catalogue and online sales at Mothercare and its Early Learning Centre unit rose 25.1 percent—impressive, but below the 47.9 percent increase in half-year direct sales. Overall sales for the second quarter rose a scant 0.3 percent, and store sales fell 2.6 percent “due to a planned reduction in space”. |

Flying Brand quarterly sales down in line with expectations
|
Third-quarter sales at Flying Brands fell more than 19 percent, to £7.5 million for the three months ended 26th September. But excluding its Greetings Direct business, which it is winding down, sales declined less than 14 percent, in line with expectations. In its trading statement, the company — whose other brands include Flying Flowers, Garden Bird Supplies and Listen2 — said it is “seeing improved response rates from our revamped promotional mailings”. |

Miranda Grubb, a former managing director at home decor cataloguer Oka Direct, launched WhataFind.com earlier this month. The website sells discounted furniture and housewares from brands such as The Cotswold Company, Feather & Black and Sweet Home London. |

Electrical components distributor RS Components has launched a mobile transactional website service that provides access to its entire product line via any web-enabled mobile device. The service is available across 80 countries in 17 languages. |

Cath Kidston custom magazines on the way
|
Home goods and clothing brand Cath Kidston plans to pump up its catalogues with a series of custom magazines. The seasonal magazines will feature both the core product range and editorial content. Publicis Blueprint will produce the magazines for the retailer/cataloguer. In another brand extension of sorts, a craft book by Ms Kidston, Make!, hit bookstores last week. |

La Redoute to eliminate 13 percent of French workforce

Multibrand, multinational mailer La Redoute, a division of retail and luxury brands giant PPR, plans to eliminate 13 percent of its French workforce, or 670 jobs, over the next four years. The cutbacks reflect a move away from traditional mail order and toward greater reliance on ecommerce. |

In 2001 the company launched the Yellow Moon brand selling to parent organisations and direct to consumers, with a proposition allowing parents to earn money for their school or a designated charity. We are looking for someone who can take the customer recruitment and retention campaigns to a new level. You will be responsible for designing, implementing and evaluating a substantial calendar of direct marketing campaigns that will help attract new customers, as well as tempt the existing customers into placing more orders.
