    Avon in agent recruitment drive

A new TV campaign, the first for Avon since the 1960s, is set to drive recruitment of new agents. A tougher financial climate usually triggers new agent applications for most direct sales businesses with Avon no exception to this. The cosmetics giant claims that it currently reaches one in three UK women and is aiming to make that two in three via the additional coverage afforded by an influx of new, keen, agents.

Otto poised to up its investment in UK

The Otto Group's strategic review of its UK business operations is set to result in new investment rather than the divestment that had been mooted in some quarters. Otto operates Freemans, Grattan, Kaleidoscope, Oli and Parcelnet.

    Findel warns of reduced profits

Findel has announced that its full year profit to March 31st would be below previous expectations but still slightly ahead of last year at around £59 million. The change is due to an increase of £5 million in its bad debt provision.

    Play.com aims to extend ranges

Play.com, the UK's third largest online retailer, is set to increase its investment in its books and clothing divisions in a bid to grow sales.

    Seton rolls out Webchat

Seton is claiming strong take up from its customers for the Webchat functionality it has introduced to its website. This enables Seton's customers to talk with its product specialists via a chat screen rather than a telephone call. Links are positioned throughout its website directing customers to the service which also comes up as a default whenever a customer search on the site fails to find a product.

    Adili acquires Ascension

Adili, the online retail business co-founded by former ASOS director Quentin Griffiths has acquired Ascension, one of its main suppliers which had fallen into trading difficulties. Adili which launched on the junior AIM late last year has said that it expects to declare a pre-tax loss of £1.4 million for the full year to April 30th.

Verdict forecasts 32 per cent online sales growth

According to the latest research by Verdict, 2008 will see online retail sales grow by 32 per cent against offline sales at a weak 1.2 per cent. Verdict also says that online retailing is worth £19.5 billion, now accounting for seven per cent of all UK retail expenditure.
