    Littlewoods acquires Empire Stores

    Littlewoods Shop Direct Group is to buy the debtor book of Empire Stores from Redcats UK the end of the current season's catalogue, anticipated to be in July 2008. The acquisition includes the Empire Stores brand name and customer database subject to regulatory clearance. Littlewoods does not expect to save any of Empire’s 850 jobs, however.
     

    Cheshire takes top job at Kingfisher

    B&Q boss Ian Cheshire has been promoted to chief executive of retailing group Kingfisher, succeeding Gerry Murphy. Cheshire is credited with restructuring B&Q, doubling the number of stores in key markets and growing profit from £5 million to more than £80 million. Kingfisher, which also owns Screwfix Direct, has begun a search to find Cheshire’s replacement at B&Q.
     

    Whistles spins off from Mosaic

    Baugur-owned Mosaic Fashions is selling its Whistles fashion retail chain to a newly formed company led by Jane Shepherdson, a former brand director of Topshop. Keith Wilks, who worked with Shepherdson at Topshop, will join as finance director.
     

    New boss at Ironmongery Direct

    Ironmongery Direct, the architectural supplies cataloguer, has named Wayne Lysaght-Mason managing director. Lysaght-Mason was previously managing director of Bathstore, where he grew the business from 12 stores to more than 170 across the UK. He takes over from Chris Bass, who becomes executive chairman.
     

    UK division of Quebecor World falls into administration

    Quebecor World has placed its UK operations based in Corby, Northants in administration following its filing for bankruptcy protection in Canada and the United States last week. A spokesperson for Quebecor World said the UK facility has been “cash negative” since losing an important contract three years ago.
