    Redcats to close Empire Stores

    Almost 1,000 jobs in Bradford and Wakefield are to go following Redcats' shock announcement that it is to close Empire Stores. Redcats said the decision ensures the viability of its remaining UK operations: La Redoute, Daxon and Vertbaudet. It is understood that Empire Stores will shut down by January 2009 unless a buyer is found.
     

    Strong Christmas at Littlewoods

    Littlewoods Shop Direct Group experienced a sales growth of 7 percent for the six-week Christmas trading period to 4th January 2008. The home shopping giant said clothing and footwear sales were particularly strong. The group is doing well online too—its flagship Littlewoods Direct brand saw online sales rise 80 percent over the festive period.
     
    Clothing and home decor merchant Next is branching out into new areas and has started selling fitted kitchens and bathroom suites on its website and in the Next Directory. The retailer has also teamed up with bedrooms and office furniture retailer Hammonds to produce a range of fitted bedroom furniture.
     

    Another record-breaking result for Findel

    Findel enjoyed a sales rise of 23 percent for the 39 weeks ended 28th December 2007. Sales in its home shopping division, which includes I Want One of Those, Letterbox, Cotswold Company and credit businesses Ace and Studio, were up 32 percent on the same period last year. The credit businesses saw like for like sales rise 10 percent, highlighting that customers are feeling the crunch and increasingly turning to their credit accounts to shop with Findel.
     

    MandMDirect.com celebrates a strong Christmas

    A value for money offering coupled with a continued focus on the online channel helped MandMDirect.com achieve a sales rise of 29 percent for the nine weeks ending 30th December 2007. Online sales were up 51 percent. More than 1.5 million items from 435,000 orders were shipped to customers during November and December.
     

    Extreme makes a return to the high street

    Extreme Group, the parent company of sports, surf and skate wear website extremepie.com, is making a return to retail and relaunching Ex Stores with a new franchise deal. Ex Stores originally launched in 2004 but underperformed and was acquired by restructuring specialists Hilco in 2006.
