Flying Brands makes acquisitions, plans to sell Benham

Multititle catalogue group Flying Brands, which operates the Gardening Direct and Flying Flowers catalogues, has announced the acquisition of London florist Drake Algar for £500,000 and has also agreed to buy Garden Centre Online, an online retailer of gardening hardware, for £130,000.
In addition, it has confirmed that an agreement has been reached to dispose of its "noncore" collectibles business Benham in order to free up capital and resources to invest in its main gardening and gifts divisions. Flying Brands did not disclose the identity of the potential buyer, but says it has entered into heads of agreement in respect of the sale, and expects it to complete in September.


Men’s Wearhouse buys Alexandra’s assets
Men’s Wearhouse, a US-based menswear retailer, has bought UK-based corporate clothing and workwear supplier Dimensions Clothing and the assets of Alexandra for approximately £61 million. The combined businesses will be organised into a holding company of which Men’s Wearhouse will control 86 percent and the existing shareholders of Dimensions will hold the remaining 14 percent.

WrapIt directors banned from acting as company directors
Two directors of Wrapit, the wedding gift company that went bust two years ago with more than 72,000 undelivered wedding presents, have been banned from acting as company directors. Peter Gelardi, managing director, and Pepita Diamand, retail director, were disqualified for eight years and seven years respectively following an investigation into the company's insolvency.


Aspace appoints marketing head
Children’s furniture cataloguer Aspace has a new head of marketing. Gavin Armstrong, who joins from homeware cataloguer House of Bath in October, will be responsible for all direct marketing and for coordinating marketing and promotional activity across all channels of the Aspace business.


Cotton Traders upgrades website
Apparel cataloguer/retailer Cotton Traders is looking to boost ecommerce sales and has invested in an ecommerce platform from Venda to grow its online channel. The new site is part of Cotton Traders’ shift from being catalogue-led to becoming a more multichannel business.


New recruits at Oasis and Coast
Aurora Fashions, the parent company of fashion chains Oasis, Coast, Karen Millen, and Warehouse, has promoted Liz Evans to managing director of Oasis and appointed former LK Bennett chief executive Margaret McDonald as managing director of Coast.


Lands’ End opens green distribution centre
Lands’ End will open its “green” distribution centre extension next week. The apparel cataloguer hopes the new build will be awarded with a BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method) rating of “excellent” by the end of September due to the use of eco-friendly technologies and features including solar energy to heat the washrooms and the water used within them and lighting designed to minimise light pollution for local residents and wildlife.


Boden to expand range
Boden is rumoured to be introducing a maternity range as well as an online-only premium womenswear subbrand for spring 2011. A spokesperson for Boden declined to comment on the speculation.

Avoiding pitfalls in inventory
With the banks squeezing funding to small businesses, it makes sense to look at stock control and make sure that you don’t have more capital than necessary tied up in inventory.
