Reader’s Digest rescued from administration
Reader’s Digest has been acquired from administrators Moore Stephens in a £13 million management buyout funded by private equity firm Better Capital.


Electrocomponents beats expectations
Electronics distributor Electrocomponents, best known for its RS Components business, reported that profit before tax for the year ended 31st March will beat expectations and come in at approximately £73 million. In the fourth quarter, the company saw its UK sales grow 9 percent and international business increase by 19 percent.


The Hut moves into handbags
The Hut Group, an online retailer of entertainment products whose websites include Zavvi.com and thehut.com, has branched out into selling handbags via its new website Mybag.co.uk. The business is already active in the sports, health and beauty, footwear, and toys sectors.


Strong growth at M&S
Marks & Spencer released strong financial results for its last quarter, revealing a 6.2 percent rise in total UK sales for the 13 weeks to 27th March. M&S Direct, its ecommerce and home-shopping business, saw revenues increase by 48 percent.


Andy Bond steps down
Asda’s president and chief executive Andy Bond is stepping down to take up the role of chairman of the supermarket’s executive committee. He will continue with the day-to-day running of the business until a replacement is appointed.


Play.com appoints CEO
Entertainment products etailer Play.com has appointed its first ever chief executive, former Apple director John Perkins.

As we predicted last month, the number of catalogues promoting discounts and sales on their covers fell, whilst the number offering free delivery rose. What we didn’t predict however, was that the number of catalogues offering free shipping would be the highest figure we’ve recorded since we first began compiling the log.
