Royal Mail and CWU reach agreement
Royal Mail and the Communications Workers Union have agreed a deal to end the dispute over pay and modernisation. Postal workers will receive a 6.9 percent pay rise over the next three years; in turn the union will cooperate with Royal Mail’s modernisation programme, which includes the introduction of automated machinery and delivery equipment.
In other Royal Mail news, the postal operator announced it is now licensing eBay data to give marketers access to more than 140 million transactions through the auction site. The file, refreshed monthly, is anonymous and aggregated to a postcode level; it provides purchase history, type of products bought, and levels of spend—effectively enabling marketers to determine which UK postcodes are most likely to be most receptive to their products or services.

Drop in card-not-present fraud rates
Figures released by the UK Cards Association (formerly APACS) show that for the first time, losses from card-not-present fraud are on the decrease—down 19 percent from £328.4 million in 2008 to £266.4 million last year. Reasons for the decrease include retailers’ use of sophisticated fraud screening detection tools and the take-up of online fraud-prevention schemes such as MasterCard SecureCode and Verified by Visa.
